Hundreds took to the streets of Pakistan-administered Kashmir's city of Muzaffarabad on Monday, marking the 5th anniversary of India's decision to revoke the disputed region's semi-autonomy.
Footage shows protesters burning India's national flag along with portraits of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet ministers. Protesters were also seen marching with their hands symbolically tied as well as carrying black flags of the United Nation Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
"India has divided our Kashmir into two parts. With Allah's blessing, let me give a message to India, we will snatch our freedom from their clutches by force. We will never accept divided Kashmir in two parts. We will fight with India until the last drop of our blood and will continue our struggle anyway," said a protester Hafiz Aziz ur Rehman.
Article 370 of the Indian Constitution provided special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir, allowing it to have its constitution, flag, and significant internal governance powers. In August 2019, this special status was revoked through a presidential order, integrating Jammu and Kashmir fully into the Indian Union under the same constitutional framework as other states.
In December 2023, India's Supreme Court ruled in New Delhi that it was lawful for the government to strip the region of Kashmir and Jammu of its special status by presidential order in 2019.
Pakistan, however, disputes India's territorial claim to the region, said that the court ruling had 'no legal value' and was part of an annexation attempt by New Delhi.
